Why Go: In 1938, Gerald Sekoto aged 25 left for Johannesburg to attempt a career as an artist. He lived in Sophiatown and held his first solo exhibition in 1939. The Johannesburg Art Gallery purchased one of his paintings in 1940, be the first picture to enter a museum collection painted by a black artist. View a collection of his work at this venue.
