Why Go: Atakule, the funky tower visible from nearly everywhere in the city, was originally built in the 1980s by then-president Turgut Ozal, who found Ankara somewhat lacking in modern cool and wanted a structure to remedy that. The top of the tower holds a revolving restaurant and observation tower with incredible views of the city and area. The shopping mall at the base is being rebuilt to a more contemporary style.
