The Queens Zoo, which is a subsidized by the Wildlife Conservation Society, is an 11-acre space dedicated to American wildlife. Formerly the Flushing Meadows Zoo, the Queens Zoo was created for the World’s Fair in 1964. Kingsland Homestead, located in two-acre Weeping Beech Park, is one of the few remaining homes from the 18th century still in existence here in Queens. It was declared a landmark by New York City in 1965. It was the first structure, in Queens, to ever receive that honor. Although a cemetary may not be most people's ideal way to spend an afternoon, hiking some of Queens' cemeteries are great for history buffs. Known as "cemetery land" for the many cemetaries it has, Queens became the primary burial ground for NYC after Manhattan was banned from having any more burials. One of the few remaining Colonial cemeteries in Queens, Prospect Cemetery was first established in 1668. With burials of soldiers who served during the Revolutionary War, this historic cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
