Why Go: In 1876 a farmer by the name of James Cooper found a nugget of gold in the Knysna district. A gold rush followed and soon the Millwood Mining Village sprang up. Later it was discovered that there was simply not enough gold to make any mining operations profitable. Not much remains of the village today but you can go on a guided tour of the main mine and visit the museum and graveyard
