Why Go: Bachkovo Monastery is one of the oldest and biggest Bulgarian monasteries (founded in 1083). It is situated near the picturesque village of Bachkovo, at 9km distance from Asenovgrad. Preserved is the hiding place of the Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski. One of the famous building in the monastery is the so-called Old Dining Room which has unique and exquisite wall-paintings. Every year people from Asenovgrad and the region organise a traditional procession, carrying the famous wonder-making icon of the Holy Mother, which is said to have healing abilities.
