Why Go: Although a cemetary may not be most people's ideal way to spend an afternoon, hiking some of Queens' cemeteries are great for history buffs. Known as "cemetery land" for the many cemetaries it has, Queens became the primary burial ground for NYC after Manhattan was banned from having any more burials. One of the few remaining Colonial cemeteries in Queens, Prospect Cemetery was first established in 1668. With burials of soldiers who served during the Revolutionary War, this historic cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
