Why Go: The residence of Russian emperors was founded in the middle of the 18th century by Empress Elizabeth daughter of Peter the Great. For more than 250 years it was the place where they lived, entertained, loved and shaped destiny of the country and even determined European politics... After the revolution of 1917 it became the residence of the Provisional Government of Kerensky and later was opened to public as the largest museum of Russia. It's one of the few European royal palaces which preserved its interiors and historical spirit.
